Obituary for Gerald "Gerry" Alan Greenberger

The family writes --

Beloved husband and father, Gerald (Gerry) Alan Greenberger, 73, passed
away on April 3, 2020. He contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital
recovering from surgery, and the virus was the ultimate cause of

Born in the Bronx, New York, to Martin and Jewel Greenberger (nee
Gross), Gerry was adored by his grandparents and parents and became a
proud oldest brother to David and Kenneth. After growing up in
Teaneck, New Jersey, Gerry left home to earn his BA from Rutgers
University, and both his MA and PhD in French history from Brown
University, writing his dissertation on political thought under Louis
XIV. French history was his first love, and he taught the subject to
college students at both Brown and William and Mary for several years.
He would forever think of himself as a teacher and historian even
though he decided to change paths subsequently, and he went on to earn
a fourth degree: his JD from Yale Law School.

While he had a 36-year career practicing law, if you had asked him for
his career highlights he would tell you that they were making a few
lifelong friends and meeting his treasured wife, Debby Groisser.

Together, Gerry and Debby raised two children in Short Hills, NJ.
Gerry was a loyal, protective, kind, and caring husband, father, and
member of the community. He held family values at a premium and helmed
his family unit for over 33 years with wisdom, compassion, and humor.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Debby, children Evan and Emily, his
brothers David and Kenneth, his brother-in-law David Groisser, his
sisters-in-law Susan Greenberger and Ruth Heitin, as well as two
nieces, one nephew, and many cousins.

Given the dire circumstances of the global pandemic, a brief graveside
service will be held for immediate family only. Donations to
Montefiore’s Critical Response Care Fund
( and the COVID-19 Solidarity
Response Fund for WHO (, or to any
charity of choice, are welcomed and appreciated.
